Travelling to Abidjan

VISA AND PASSPORT REQUIREMENTS

A biometric visa and valid passport are required to enter Côte d’Ivoire. To apply, attach to your visa application form (downloadable from the Embassy website), your passport valid 6 months beyond your return date, a recent passport photograph, copies of passport, proof of address and activity, hotel reservation or legalized invitation letter from the host, a copy of the round-trip air ticket.

HEALTH REQUIREMENTS

 Yellow fever: vaccination required.

This vaccination is only administered at designated vaccination centers. To find the nearest center, please ask your local doctor. The vaccination takes effect after 10 days only, (except for a booster: immediate protection). Therefore, vaccination arrangements should be made in advance.

  • Recommended vaccinations : Polio, Hepatitis B and A, typhoid
  • Anti-malaria treatment recommended (as prescribed by your practitioner)

AIRPORT

Félix-Houphouët-Boigny International airport is 10 miles from the centre of Abidjan (around 25 minutes).

CURRENCY

Local currency is the West African CFA Franc (XOF), although Euro notes are accepted in a large number of shops and restaurants. Travelers checks (in Euros only) may only be exchanged in banks and certain hotels in the cities. Credit cards (Visa and MasterCard) are accepted in certain hotels, travel agencies and some shops in Abidjan, as well as in some hotels further inland. ATMs are available throughout the city  (Visa most often). You can withdraw up to 200,000 CFA Francs a week over the counter at banks provided that you have a Visa card or a Euro check book. Some shops and hotels also accept payment by credit card. Banks are open Monday to Friday, from 8:30 am to 11:30 am and from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm.

LOCAL TRANSPORTATION

By taxi: in the major cities of Côte d’Ivoire, taxis are available. They are orange in Abidjan and generally equipped with a meter. If that is not the case, the fare should be negotiated before departure. There are also collective taxis called “woro-woro”, the fair is 100 or 200 FCFA.

By car: you can find car rental agencies at Abidjan airport or in the city center: Africar, Avis, Europcar, Budget, etc. An international driving license is required, as well as insurance.
